Waltham Forest College - ‘Campaign for Change' Challenge!
The Challenge:
- ESSA delivered Campaign for Change training to students
- Four groups of students from Waltham Forest College were given one week to put together a campaign of their choice
- The following week, students presented their campaigns and a winning group was chosen!

Group 1 - Stop the Postcode War
- Gizem, explained the campaign: "Postcode wars are when people, usually young teenagers, are not allowed to go into other areas without feeling threatened as they are not from that post code."
- Students created a petition to get support from other students and wrote letters to the Council about the need for more activities for young people to help solve the problem
- Students put on a role play to act out the problem between rival gangs

Group 2 - Keep the driving age at 17
- Campaign against the Government's plans to raise the driving age to 18
- Students were unhappy as they wanted to be mechanics and raising the driving age would affect their careers.
- Students created artwork for a noticeboard; sent text messages around the college; and created tv and radio interviews to broadcast throughout the college
- Riaz said: "we thought about what we could do to change the law and decided to speak to the Prime Minister as we don't have a vote!"

Group 3 - Campaign 2 Escape
- Students want more school trips
- They presented their ideas to the judges with a funky PowerPoint presentation
- They researched the cost of going to places like Alton Towers and created a petition to get support from other students
- Nueman, said: "I liked doing the campaign, it was good"

Group 4 - Club 16
- Students wanted to allow 16 and 17 year olds to go clubbing
- Students did lots of research to find out about club nights for 16 and 17 year olds
- Students decided to put on a play about the issue and invite other students along - they created posters and leaflets to hand out at the train station
