Waltham Forest College - ‘Campaign for Change' Challenge!

The Challenge:

  • ESSA delivered Campaign for Change training to students
  • Four groups of students from Waltham Forest College were given one week to put together a campaign of their choice
  • The following week, students presented their campaigns and a winning group was chosen!

If you are interested in running the ‘Campaign for Change' Challenge in your school or college, contact us for more information.

Group 1 - Stop the Postcode War

  • Gizem, explained the campaign: "Postcode wars are when people, usually young teenagers, are not allowed to go into other areas without feeling threatened as they are not from that post code."
  • Students created a petition to get support from other students and wrote letters to the Council about the need for more activities for young people to help solve the problem
  • Students put on a role play to act out the problem between rival gangs

Group 2 - Keep the driving age at 17

  • Campaign against the Government's plans to raise the driving age to 18
  • Students were unhappy as they wanted to be mechanics and raising the driving age would affect their careers.
  • Students created artwork for a noticeboard; sent text messages around the college; and created tv and radio interviews to broadcast throughout the college
  • Riaz said: "we thought about what we could do to change the law and decided to speak to the Prime Minister as we don't have a vote!"
