Real Talk

We believe that student voice activities should be accessible to all members of the school community, and not just the most articulate students. With financial support from the Department for Education ESSA has worked with a range of young people in special schools, alternative education provision, pupil referral units and secondary schools to create the Real Talk programme. The programme has been devised to enable young people with learning or behavioural challenges to gain the skills and confidence they need to take part in student voice activities and speak out about issues that affect them.

There are two levels of the Real Talk programme – Level 1 provides games and activities to improve young people's confidence and communication skills. Level 2 is designed to train young people to become peer trainers so that they can deliver the Level 1 material.

Level 1 units cover:

  • What Do You Want to Change?
  • Listening Skills
  • Using positive Body Language to Support Your Message
  • Respect and Dignity – Keeping Your Cool
  • Confidence in Speaking
  • Real Talk Overview

More and more young people are becoming involved in the decision-making that happens at school or college. This may be as part of a student council, associate governor or member of a student interview panel. To do this effectively, it's important that students are able to communicate well and can ask the right questions to make informed decisions.

Ofsted now takes into consideration the degree to which young people feel that their school or college acts on their views. The ‘Asking the Right Questions' toolkit and training programme helps students like you to gain the skills and confidence you need to ask the right questions.

Students will gain:

  • Increased communication, reasoning, organisational and negotiating skills

  • More confidence in talking to other students and adults

  • Enthusiasm about being able to positively influence school policy.
